A Week As A Fourth Year Exchange Student From Taiwan

Welcome to The Scoop where we ask students from all years and faculties about how they spend their time during a seven-day period.

Attention, Gaels! We're featuring week-in-the-life entries from all Queen's University students on a regular basis, and we want to hear from you. Submit yours here.

Today: A fourth year Commerce exchange student from Taiwan pays Wolfe Island a visit, courtesy of the Queen's University International Centre (QUIC).

School: Queen’s University

Program: Commerce - Exchange student from Taiwan

Age: 23

Gender: Female

Salary: $0

Total Spend: $26.84

Day 1

6:30am - Get up (or sleep in a little haha) and get ready for my morning class. I would fry hash browns if time permitted.

7:55 am - I get on Bus 3 and like to listen to podcast channels like All Ears English and Yahoo Finance.

10:00 am - After my early morning class, I go to the gym for lift weighting.

11:00 am - I head over to the JDUC to heat up my lunch. I love asian food so I usually cook my lunch by myself.

1:30 pm - I go to my next class.

5:30 pm - I go explore different school clubs and to experience different club cultures! For the first week when school just begins, I usually go to different clubs and see what they’re like and which ones interest me!

7:30 pm - I go home, review some of my upcoming courses and pretty much sums up my day!

Day 2

9:00 am - My classes start late today so I can usually sleep later. Breakfast is important for me to start a brand-new day! Thus, I would begin preparing for my lunch as soon as I get up. I usually watch some TV shows on laptop while having breakfast.

1:00 pm - Once again, I take bus 3 and head to class in Goodes Hall.

2:30 pm - After class, I take the bus to Metro to buy some groceries. There is a discount exclusively for students on Tuesday in Metro! So I would buy some groceries but not too many; after all, I can’t carry all my groceries haha!

4:30 pm - When I get home, I start preparing for dinner. I watch Friends while having dinner!

9:30 pm - At this time, I gave a call to my parents to have a nice chat!

Day 3

9:00 am - Get up and prepare my breakfast. After having breakfast, I get ready for school and tune in to podcast channels such as All Ears English and Yahoo Finance.

4:00 pm - There’s not much to say after my school. On Wednesdays, I usually go directly home after class and it pretty much sums up the day. At home, I will pick up a novel to enjoy.

Day 4

8:30 am - Get up and get ready for class as usual!

1:00 pm - After my class is dismissed, I will go to the library to do my assignments since I need to attend an event at 5:30 pm. Before 5:30 pm, I would stay at the library to finish my assignments and preview courses for next week.

5:30 pm - I attend an English Conversation Program held by QUIC on a weekly basis. It was a lot of fun because I met a lot of different people there. We practice speaking skills by talking as much as possible. During this process, we get to know each other more. There will be a new topic every week, so I can be exposed to different themes every week. I have a lot of fun here!

Day 5

9:00 am - I don’t have class today, so I usually spend my Friday morning doing some housework such as laundry and cleaning my room. Cleaning my room usually takes me around one hour to do.

12:00 pm - In the afternoon, I go to one of coffee shops in downtown Kingston - Balzac's!. I grab a cup of coffee, and read novels there to spend my chilling afternoon there. I like to sit near the French window, so I can sometimes lift my head and observe passersby walking in front of me and enjoy the vibe. It is cool!

Day 6

9:00 am - On this day, I usually plan to go out further with my friends. We usually plan some one-day trip. We took a free ferry to Wolfe Island to enjoy the scenery there. Sometimes we will sign up for trips held by QUIC and be off to big cities like Toronto or Montreal. These trips usually take me one day from early morning to late night. As the proverb goes: “Work hard, play hard!” I see Saturday as my relaxing day to go on traveling and enjoy Canada vibes!

I used some tips from The Roam Free Travel Blog to get some inspiration on minimalistic packing hacks. Highly recommend!

Day 7

10:00 am - I usually wake up late today. Since I’m out of town on Saturday, I will arrange my meetings on Sunday. In these meetings, I go to school to have discussions with my team members.

6:30 am - Get up (or sleep in a little haha) and get ready for my morning class. I would fry hash browns if time permitted.he evening. On Sunday night, I invited my housemates to enjoy movies together!
